Cumene hydroperoxide
Description
Cumene hydroperoxide (CAS 80-15-9), also known as CHP or isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide, is an organic peroxide used industrially as a free-radical source for initiating polymerization and curing reactions.
It functions as a highly effective oxidizing agent in rubber and polymer manufacturing, where controlled radical generation is critical to process consistency. In rubber compounding, CHP acts as a cross-linking agent.
This chemical is used to vulcanize silicone and specialty elastomers, producing materials with improved heat resistance and mechanical performance. Polymer producers use it to initiate emulsion and solution polymerization.
It is effective for styrene, acrylates, and other vinyl monomers in the manufacture of resins and synthetic rubbers. It also serves as a co-agent in redox initiator systems where it pairs with reducing agents.
This enables low-temperature polymerization, which is a requirement in cold rubber processes. Tire manufacturers rely on CHP-based curing systems to achieve consistent crosslink density in high-performance rubber compounds.
Cumene hydroperoxide is supplied as a liquid, typically as an 80% or 88% active solution in cumene. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial polymerization and curing applications.
Bulk liquid supply in drums and IBC containers is the norm, with concentration and purity confirmed by titration or GC analysis per buyer specification to ensure high quality standards.
