Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
Description
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (CAS 9003-56-9), commonly known as ABS plastic, is a thermoplastic terpolymer used across manufacturing industries for its balance of rigidity, toughness, and processability.
It is a primary material choice where impact resistance and dimensional stability are required in finished parts. In automotive manufacturing, ABS plastic is used to produce interior trim panels and dashboards.
These structural housings must withstand mechanical stress and temperature variation. Electronics manufacturers rely on it for device enclosures, keyboard components, and connectors where precise molding tolerances are critical.
In building and construction, ABS is specified for pipe fittings, drainage systems, and protective housings. This material is chosen where long-term durability under load is required for infrastructure projects.
Consumer goods producers use it extensively in appliance casings and power tool bodies. In these applications, surface finish quality and structural integrity are both essential procurement priorities for the manufacturer.
ABS is supplied as pellets or granules, the standard form for injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming operations. Grades are differentiated by impact resistance, heat deflection temperature, and flame retardancy.
General-purpose, high-impact, and flame-retardant classifications are available to meet specific industrial needs. Specialty grades include plating-grade ABS for electroplating and transparent ABS for aesthetic end uses.
