Beta-galactosidase
Description
Beta-galactosidase (CAS 9031-11-2), commercially available under the trade name Lactozym® Pure, is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of lactose into glucose and galactose. Sourced for use across food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and biotechnology, it enables lactose reduction in dairy products and supports downstream bioprocessing applications.
In dairy manufacturing, this enzyme is used to produce lactose-free milk, yogurt, and cheese, meeting consumer demand without altering nutritional profiles or the final product quality. Pharmaceutical formulators apply it in the development of lactose-intolerance therapies and as a processing aid in oral dosage form development for various therapeutic applications.
In biotechnology, it functions as a reporter enzyme in gene expression assays and cell-based screening platforms, where accurate activity measurement is critical to assay design. Food ingredient producers also use it to improve sweetness and solubility in whey-based products by converting lactose to more fermentable sugars for industrial use.
The product is supplied as a liquid enzyme concentrate or lyophilized powder, depending on the application and required activity units for specific manufacturing processes. Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications are available, with grades conforming to FCC and USP standards available for regulated manufacturing environments.
