Benzonitrile
Description
Benzonitrile (CAS 100-47-0), also known as phenyl cyanide, is an aromatic nitrile solvent and chemical intermediate used across pharmaceutical synthesis, flavor chemistry, and catalyst manufacturing.
Its role is primarily as a reactive building block and polar aprotic solvent in multi-step organic synthesis. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
This is particularly important where nitrile-to-amine or nitrile-to-amide transformations are required. Flavor and fragrance formulators use it as a precursor to benzylamine derivatives and aromatic aroma compounds.
These compounds are frequently found in finished flavor blends. In catalyst development, it acts as a ligand precursor and stabilizing agent in transition metal catalyst systems, including palladium-based catalysts.
Specialty chemical producers also employ it as a solvent in electrochemical applications and high-polarity reaction media. It is often used where conventional solvents are unsuitable for specific chemical reactions.
The product is supplied as a clear liquid in standard packaging ranging from laboratory quantities to bulk drums and IBC containers. Technical grade is the most common commercial specification available.
High-purity grades of 99% or greater are available for pharmaceutical and catalyst applications. Buyers sourcing for regulated end uses should confirm purity certificates and residual impurity profiles with suppliers.
