Triacetin
Description
Triacetin (CAS 102-76-1), also known as glyceryl triacetate and approved as E1518, is a food-grade plasticizer, solvent, and humectant used across food, fragrance, and personal care manufacturing. It functions primarily as a carrier and fixative for flavor compounds and as a plasticizing agent in film coatings. In food and confectionery production, it acts as a solvent and carrier for flavor concentrates.
This chemical improves dispersion and stability in hard candies, chewing gum bases, and baked goods. Fragrance formulators use it to fix and extend volatile aroma compounds in perfumes and flavor emulsions. Controlled release is a formulation priority in these applications. In personal care, it functions as a plasticizer in film-forming products such as nail coatings and hair fixatives for consumer use.
Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturers also use it as a plasticizer in tablet film coatings and controlled-release capsule shells. It is supplied as a clear, colorless liquid in bulk and intermediate formats. Food-grade material is available to FCC and E1518 specifications. Pharmaceutical-grade material is also available meeting USP and Ph. Eur. standards for high-purity manufacturing requirements.
Grade selection is typically driven by end-use regulatory requirements across food, cosmetic, and pharma applications. This ensures compliance with global safety and quality standards for industrial production.
