Lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate
What is Lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate?
Lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate (CAS 10277-43-7), systematically named lanthanum(III) nitrate hexahydrate or lanthanum trinitrate hexahydrate (La(NO₃)₃·6H₂O), is a water-soluble rare earth salt supplied as white crystals with a total rare earth oxide (TREO) content of approximately 37.5 % and a lanthanum content in the range of 30–34 % elemental La.
Where is Lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate used?
- Automotive and emissions control: direct precursor for lanthanum-stabilised γ-alumina washcoats in three-way and diesel oxidation catalysts
- Oil, gas and energy: dopant precursor in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and reforming catalysts
- Solid oxide fuel cell stacks: starting material for perovskite-phase electrode materials including LSM and LSCF
- Electronics and solar PV: preparation of LaPO₄:Ce,Tb green phosphors and PLZT piezoelectric ceramics
- Pharmaceutical: intermediate in the synthesis of lanthanum carbonate API for renal phosphate-binder formulations
- Specialty cement, leather and textile processing auxiliaries, and water-treatment applications are consistent with registered use categories under REACH.
Good to know: The anhydrous form (CAS 10099-59-9) is a related grade for low moisture content. As an oxidising solid, the product is classified under UN 1477, Class 5.1 and must be stored away from organic materials and reducing agents.
Commercial specifications
- Purities from 2N to 5N, expressed on a La₂O₃/TREO basis
- High-purity 4N and 5N grades: trace metal impurities below 0.01 %
- Packaging: 25 kg polyethylene-lined fibre drums; big-bag format; aqueous solution grade (La 20–25 % w/w) in IBCs
- EU REACH registration of lanthanum trinitrate in the 10–100 t/a tonnage band
