Praseodymium oxide
What is Praseodymium oxide?
Praseodymium oxide (CAS 12037-29-5), formally praseodymium(III,IV) oxide with the formula Pr₆O₁₁, is a rare earth oxide; it is a fine black-to-brown powder.
Where is Praseodymium oxide used?
- Ceramics: primary precursor for praseodymium-zircon yellow pigments in wall and floor tile glazes, sanitaryware and technical ceramics
- Glass: clean green tint in optical and decorative glass; component of didymium glass for protective eyewear in glassblowing and flame-working
- Magnetics and metallurgy: source material for praseodymium-neodymium (Pr-Nd) alloys used in NdFeB permanent magnets for electric motors, wind turbine generators and industrial automation drives
- Catalysts: CO oxidation catalysts, where its mixed-valence Pr³⁺/Pr⁴⁺ character contributes to redox activity for exhaust gas treatment and industrial emission control
- Electronics and solar PV: high-purity Pr₆O₁₁ is evaluated as a dielectric and as a dopant in phosphors and thin-film coatings.
Good to know: Standard grades carry Pr₆O₁₁/TREO ≥ 99 %, high-purity lots 99.9–99.99 %, with TREO ≥ 99 % as the baseline purity descriptor. Buyers requiring specific LOI limits, d50 targets or detailed rare earth impurity certificates should contact SoleChem.
Commercial specifications
- Pr₆O₁₁/TREO ≥ 99 % (standard); 99.9–99.99 % (high-purity)
- TREO ≥ 99 % baseline
- LOI and median particle size (d50) reported on specification sheets
- Individual rare earth impurity profiles (e.g. CeO₂, Nd₂O₃)
- Packaging: 25 kg multi-wall bags; 500–1,000 kg big-bags; 1–5 kg units for high-purity research lots
