Description

Lutein (CAS 127-40-2), also designated E161b, is a naturally derived xanthophyll carotenoid pigment extracted primarily from marigold flowers. It functions as a yellow-to-orange colorant and antioxidant across food, supplement, and cosmetic applications.

Procurement is driven by both its coloring performance and its positioning as a functional botanical ingredient. In dietary supplements and nutraceuticals, it is formulated into softgels, tablets, and functional foods targeting eye health.

This positioning remains a major commercial driver for ingredient sourcing. Food manufacturers use it as a natural colorant in beverages, dairy products, and confectionery where synthetic dye replacement is a priority.

In personal care, it is incorporated into anti-aging creams and serums where antioxidant activity supports product claims around skin protection. Feed and aquaculture producers also source it to enhance pigmentation.

This includes the pigmentation of egg yolks and farmed fish flesh. The product is supplied as a dark viscous oleoresin, free-flowing powder, or beadlet form, with beadlets preferred for dry supplement blending.

Standard grades include food-grade and USP-compliant specifications, with concentration levels typically ranging from 5% to 20% in oleoresin and powder formats. This ensures versatility across various manufacturing processes.

Crystalline lutein is available for applications requiring higher purity, and water-dispersible forms are offered for beverage and liquid formulation use. These options allow for precise control over the final product characteristics.
