Description

Borane dimethyl sulfide complex (CAS 13292-87-0), commonly abbreviated as BMS, is a stabilized borane reagent used as a selective reducing agent in organic synthesis. Unlike unstabilized borane, BMS offers improved handling characteristics. These features make it practical for large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing and complex chemical processing. BMS is the reagent of choice for reducing carboxylic acids, amides, and oximes to their corresponding alcohols and amines.

In active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) synthesis, it is used in asymmetric hydroboration reactions. It is often paired with chiral auxiliaries to produce enantiomerically enriched intermediates for various drug candidates. In agrochemical manufacturing, BMS supports the synthesis of herbicide and fungicide intermediates where controlled selectivity is critical. This ensures high yields and purity during the production of specialized crop protection chemicals.

Biotechnology researchers also employ it in the preparation of boronated compounds for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) research. It is further utilized in the development of labeled biochemical probes for diagnostic use. Borane dimethyl sulfide complex is supplied as a liquid, typically as a neat reagent or in solution with tetrahydrofuran (THF). Standard concentrations of 2M and 10M in THF are commonly available for laboratory use.

Material is typically offered at reagent and synthesis grades to meet diverse industrial needs. High-purity specifications are available to meet strict pharmaceutical intermediate requirements and regulatory standards.
