Sodium ascorbate
Description
Sodium ascorbate (CAS 134-03-2), also sold under the food additive designation E301, is the sodium salt form of ascorbic acid used commercially as an antioxidant and preservative across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing.
Unlike ascorbic acid, it offers a neutral pH profile that makes it suitable for sensitive formulations where acidity must be controlled. In food processing, E301 prevents oxidative discoloration and rancidity in cured meats and beverages.
It often functions as a curing accelerator alongside nitrites in packaged goods. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a stable, non-acidic vitamin C source in tablet, powder, and injectable formulations where patient tolerability is a priority.
In cosmetic and personal care products, it acts as an antioxidant stabilizer in serums, creams, and topical formulations. This helps to protect active ingredients from oxidative degradation during storage and application.
The food supplement sector also uses it as a direct vitamin C source in effervescent tablets, sachets, and functional drink mixes. Sodium ascorbate is supplied as a white crystalline powder for various industrial applications.
Standard grades include food-grade (FCC), USP, BP, and Ph. Eur., with pharmaceutical grades subject to stricter purity thresholds. Bulk supply is typically available in 25 kg bags or fiber drums.
