Orcein
Description
Orcein (CAS 1400-62-0), also known commercially as orchil and approved as food colorant E182, is a natural dye derived from lichens used to impart red-purple to violet hues across food, textile, and biological staining applications.
Its depth of color and affinity for protein-based substrates make it a recognized choice where natural origin and distinctive tone are procurement priorities. In food and beverage production, E182 is approved for use as a colorant to deliver red-violet shades.
This dye is utilized in confectionery, beverages, and specialty products where natural-origin labeling is commercially advantageous. Textile manufacturers apply orcein to wool, silk, and other protein fibers, where it bonds directly without requiring a mordant.
This direct bonding capability reduces processing steps in industrial dyeing operations. In histology and biological research, it is the active component in staining preparations used to differentiate elastic fibers and chromosomal material in tissue sections.
Leather and paper industries also use it to achieve consistent violet tones in specialty finishing and decorative applications. Orcein is supplied as a dark brown to black powder that yields characteristic red-purple color in solution.
It is available in natural and synthetic forms, with synthetic orcein commonly offered for laboratory and histological staining grades. Food-grade material conforming to E182 specifications is available for regulated colorant applications.
