Maltitol
Description
Maltitol (CAS 585-88-6), also known by its food additive designation E965, is a sugar alcohol derived from maltose used as a reduced-calorie bulk sweetener in food, pharmaceutical, and personal care manufacturing.
It delivers sweetness close to sucrose while supporting sugar-free and diabetic-friendly product claims without the aftertaste associated with high-intensity sweeteners. In confectionery and baked goods, it replaces sucrose in sugar-free chocolates.
Hard candies and chewing gum benefit from its comparable bulk and mouthfeel. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a tablet excipient and coating agent in sugar-free formulations where controlled glycemic response is a labeling requirement.
In personal care, its humectant properties make it suitable for moisture-retention in toothpastes, lip balms, and skin creams. Food formulators also incorporate it into low-glycemic nutrition bars and functional foods.
Clean-label sweetener positioning is commercially important for these applications. This versatile ingredient is supplied as a white crystalline powder and as a liquid syrup, with the syrup form preferred for applications requiring ease of blending.
Standard grades include food-grade and FCC-compliant specifications, with pharmaceutical-grade material available to USP and Ph. Eur. standards. Bulk quantities are typically offered in bags or drums.
Syrup is supplied in IBCs or tankers to meet industrial requirements. These high-quality standards ensure consistency across diverse manufacturing sectors, from large-scale food production to specialized pharmaceutical compounding.
