n-methylmorpholine n-oxide
Description
N-Methylmorpholine N-oxide (CAS 7529-22-8), commonly known as NMO, is a stable, recyclable oxidant used across chemical synthesis and industrial processing. It functions primarily as a co-oxidant in catalytic oxidation reactions.
The compound also serves as a cellulose dissolution agent in fiber production. In textile and pulp manufacturing, NMO is the solvent system of choice for dissolving cellulose in the Lyocell process.
This application enables the production of fibers such as Tencel. Synthetic chemists rely on NMO as the stoichiometric co-oxidant in Sharpless dihydroxylation and Ley oxidation protocols.
In these processes, it regenerates osmium tetroxide or TPAP catalysts in situ. In biotechnology and life sciences, NMO supports selective oxidation steps in the synthesis of complex molecules.
This includes the production of carbohydrates and pharmaceutical intermediates. Water treatment applications utilize NMO-based oxidation systems for degrading recalcitrant organic compounds.
NMO is supplied as an aqueous solution, most commonly at 50% concentration, and as a monohydrate powder for applications requiring precise stoichiometry for chemical reactions.
Technical and reagent grades are available to serve both industrial-scale fiber processing and laboratory synthesis demands. Packaging ranges from small quantities to bulk drum supply.
These options support research use as well as continuous manufacturing operations. Our product meets rigorous industry requirements for purity and performance in diverse chemical environments.
