Cellulose
Description
Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC, CAS 9004-34-6), also known commercially as Cellulose 248 and Kingcot, is a purified, partially depolymerized cellulose used across food, pharmaceutical, and industrial manufacturing.
Approved as E460, it functions primarily as a binder, filler, and rheology modifier in solid and semi-solid formulations. In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, MCC acts as a direct compression binder.
This material improves tablet hardness and disintegration without requiring wet granulation. Food producers use it as an anti-caking agent and fat replacer in low-calorie products, where it maintains texture and bulk.
In construction materials, cellulose-based additives modify the rheology of cement and gypsum-based compounds. These additives are essential for controlling water retention and overall workability during application.
Paper and textile processors use refined cellulose grades as a functional filler and coating agent. These applications help to improve surface properties and dimensional stability in the final manufactured goods.
MCC is supplied as a white, free-flowing powder in a range of particle size grades. These variations are suited to different compaction and flow requirements across various industrial and laboratory settings.
Established grades include USP/NF, Ph. Eur., BP, and FCC, covering pharmaceutical and food-grade applications. These standards ensure the highest level of safety and performance.
Crystalline cellulose grades are also available for specialty industrial applications. These are used where higher purity and defined crystallinity are required for specific chemical or mechanical processes.
