Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (CAS 9004-65-3), commercially known as HPMC and approved as food additive E464, is a cellulose-derived polymer used across pharmaceuticals, construction, food, and personal care.

It functions primarily as a thickener, binder, and film-former, controlling viscosity and water retention in a broad range of formulations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, HPMC is a critical excipient for tablet coating.

It is used for controlled-release matrix systems and capsule shells, including vegetarian alternatives to gelatin. Tile adhesives, cement renders, and dry-mix mortars rely on it to extend open time.

This material improves workability on construction sites. Food manufacturers use E464 to stabilize emulsions, control texture in low-fat products, and prevent moisture migration in baked goods.

In personal care, it thickens shampoos, gels, and ophthalmic solutions while providing a smooth, non-tacky film on skin and hair. HPMC is supplied as a white to off-white powder in a range of viscosity grades.

It is typically characterized by methoxy and hydroxypropoxy substitution levels. Established grades include USP/NF, Ph.Eur., BP, and food-grade (FCC/E464-compliant) specifications to meet regulatory requirements.
