Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CAS 9004-32-4), commonly known as CMC or E466, is a water-soluble cellulose derivative used across industrial and consumer markets as a thickener, binder, and stabilizer. Its ability to modify viscosity and control water retention makes it a functional workhorse in formulations ranging from food products to drilling fluids. In oil and gas drilling, CMC controls fluid loss and stabilizes wellbore mud.

Food manufacturers use it under the E466 designation to improve texture and shelf stability in products such as ice cream, sauces, and baked goods. In paper and textile processing, it functions as a surface sizing agent and warp sizing agent, improving coating adhesion and yarn strength respectively.
