Description

Hydroxylapatite (CAS 1306-06-5), also known as calcium hydroxyapatite and abbreviated as HAP, is the principal mineral constituent of bone and dental enamel. It serves as the reference material for hard tissue repair and regeneration.

Its structural compatibility with natural bone drives demand across orthopedic, dental, and biomedical manufacturing sectors. In orthopedic and spinal implant manufacturing, HAP is applied as a coating on metal prostheses.

This application promotes osseointegration and long-term implant stability. Dental product formulators incorporate it into toothpastes and remineralization treatments as a functional alternative to fluoride, targeting enamel repair.

Pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers use HAP as a chromatography medium for protein and antibody purification. Its selective binding to biomolecules supports complex downstream bioprocessing workflows in modern laboratories.

In bone graft substitutes and scaffold fabrication, HAP serves as a primary structural component. It is used alone or combined with polymers to support cell attachment and tissue ingrowth during the healing process.

Hydroxylapatite is supplied as a fine white powder in varying particle size distributions. It is also available in porous granule and block forms for specialized surgical applications and medical device manufacturing.

Established grades include pharmaceutical-grade, USP-compliant, and chromatography-grade specifications. Synthetic and sintered variants are available to meet specific density and porosity requirements for industrial use.
