Sorbitan monododecanoate

Sorbitan monododecanoate (CAS 1338-39-2), commercially recognized as Sorbitan monolaurate and approved as E493, is a sorbitan ester derived from sorbitol and lauric acid.

It functions primarily as a non-ionic emulsifier and dispersing agent across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care manufacturing. In food production, E493 stabilizes emulsions in bakery coatings and confectionery.

It is used in fat-based systems where consistent texture and shelf life are critical purchasing criteria. Pharmaceutical formulators use it to emulsify topical creams, ointments, and oral preparations.

It is often used in combination with polysorbates to achieve target HLB values. Personal care manufacturers incorporate it into lotions, sunscreens, and hair conditioners for emulsion stability.

The product is valued for its mild skin compatibility. In textile and leather processing, it acts as a fiber lubricant and softening agent applied during finishing operations.

Sorbitan monolaurate is supplied as a pale yellow to amber viscous liquid or soft waxy solid depending on temperature and grade. Food-grade material conforming to E493 specifications is available.

Pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP/NF and Ph. Eur. monographs are both commercially available. Technical grade is also offered for industrial textile and leather applications.
