Sorbitan monooleate

Sorbitan monooleate (CAS 1338-43-8), commercially recognized as Span 80 and approved as E494 in food applications, is a nonionic lipophilic emulsifier derived from sorbitol and oleic acid.

It stabilizes water-in-oil emulsions and dispersions across food, cosmetic, and industrial manufacturing processes. In food production, E494 functions as an emulsifier in shortenings, margarine, and bakery fats.

This additive prevents phase separation and improves texture consistency in various food products. Personal care formulators use Span 80 to build stable water-in-oil creams, lotions, and ointment bases.

It is often paired with polysorbate 80 to fine-tune HLB balance in complex formulations. Textile and leather processing operations apply it as a wetting and softening agent for better results.

The chemical improves fiber lubrication and dye penetration during finishing stages. In agrochemical and industrial formulations, SMO acts as a dispersant and emulsifier for pesticide concentrates.

It is also utilized in metalworking fluids to ensure stability and performance. Sorbitan monooleate is supplied as an amber, oily liquid in drum and IBC quantities for large scale use.

Standard grades include food-grade meeting FCC and E494 specifications and technical-grade for industrial applications. Cosmetic-grade material is also available for specialized needs.
