Monoolein
Description
Monoolein (CAS 25496-72-4), also known as GMO and commercially as Tego STO-V or T-Sol 85, is a monoglyceride ester of oleic acid used across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing.
Approved as E496, it functions primarily as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and moisturizing carrier in complex formulations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, GMO is used to form liquid crystalline drug delivery systems.
These systems, particularly cubic phase gels, enable controlled release of active compounds. Food producers incorporate it as an emulsifier in bakery fats, margarine, and dairy analogs to stabilize oil-water interfaces.
This stabilization helps extend shelf life and improve texture. In personal care, it acts as a skin-conditioning carrier in creams and serums, improving the spreadability and penetration of active ingredients.
Cosmetic formulators also use it as a solubilizer for lipophilic actives in water-based systems where conventional emulsifiers fall short. Monoolein is supplied as a pale yellow to amber liquid or semi-solid.
The physical state depends on temperature and purity grade. It is available in food-grade (FCC) and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with purity levels typically ranging from 90% to 99% monoglyceride content.
Bulk supply is standard in drums and IBCs. High-purity grades are sourced for parenteral and controlled-release pharmaceutical applications to ensure the highest safety and performance standards in sensitive formulations.
