3,5-dimethylpyrazole
Description
3,5-Dimethylpyrazole (CAS 67-51-6), commonly abbreviated as DMP, is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound used primarily as a nitrification inhibitor in agricultural and industrial applications. By blocking the enzymatic conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soil, it extends the availability of nitrogen fertilizers and reduces nitrous oxide emissions. In agriculture, DMP is the active component in formulations.
These formulations are applied alongside urea and ammonium-based fertilizers to improve nitrogen use efficiency in crops. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a building block for synthesizing pyrazole-containing APIs. Its reactive NH group enables controlled derivatization for various intermediates. In water treatment, DMP-based formulations help manage nitrification in wastewater systems and cooling towers during processing.
Personal care formulators incorporate it into select preservation and stabilization systems where heterocyclic nitrogen chemistry is required. The material is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline solid. It is typically available in powder or flake form. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, with purity specifications commonly ranging from 98% to 99%+ as confirmed by GC or HPLC analysis.
Packaging is available in kilogram-scale quantities for laboratory and development use. This scales to bulk drum supply for industrial and agrochemical production to meet high-volume manufacturing requirements.
