Potassium chloride
Description
Potassium chloride (CAS 7447-40-7), commercially known as muriate of potash or by its designation E508, is a mineral salt sourced from natural evaporite deposits and produced synthetically for industrial use.
It functions as a potassium source, electrolyte replenisher, flavor enhancer, and processing aid across food, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and water treatment applications. In food manufacturing, it replaces or extends sodium chloride.
This ingredient is used in reduced-sodium products, delivering saltiness without increasing sodium content in processed meats, dairy, and snack formulations. Agricultural buyers source it as a primary potassium fertilizer.
It supplies the nutrient directly to soil or as a component in blended NPK fertilizers for crop production. Pharmaceutical and IV solution manufacturers use it as an electrolyte active in oral rehydration salts.
It is also utilized in dialysis fluids and parenteral preparations. Water treatment facilities apply it in ion exchange softening systems as a sodium-free regenerant for resin beds to maintain water quality.
Potassium chloride is available as white crystalline granules, coarse crystals, or fine powder depending on the intended application. Standard grades include food-grade (FCC, E508) and USP/BP for pharmaceutical use.
It is also available in technical or agricultural grade for industrial and fertilizer applications. Bulk supply is common for agricultural and industrial buyers, with smaller packaged formats available for procurement.
