Gibberellic acid
Description
Gibberellic acid (CAS 77-06-5), also known as GA3 or Gibberellin A3, is a plant growth regulator used commercially to control flowering, fruit development, and stem elongation in cultivated crops.
Sold under trade names such as Berelex and Brellin, it is one of the most widely sourced gibberellins in agricultural supply chains. In fruit production, GA3 is applied to table grapes to increase berry size.
It is also used to improve cluster looseness, directly affecting marketable yield and pack-out grades. Citrus growers use it to delay rind senescence, extending the post-harvest window for export markets.
Seed companies and cereal producers apply it to promote uniform germination and accelerate malting in barley processing. In specialty horticulture, it is used to break dormancy in ornamental bulbs.
It is also utilized to regulate flowering timing for commercial cut flower schedules. Gibberellic acid is supplied as a technical powder, water-soluble tablets, and concentrated liquid formulations.
Standard commercial grades include 90% technical powder and lower-concentration soluble granules formulated for direct field application. Purity specifications vary by intended use for the product.
Higher-purity grades are available for research and regulated agricultural programs. This chemical remains a staple for industrial agricultural suppliers and large-scale commercial farming operations globally.
