Calcium sulfite
Description
Calcium sulfite (CAS 10257-55-3), also recognized in food applications as E226, is an inorganic calcium salt used commercially as a preservative, antioxidant, and reducing agent across food processing, water treatment, and industrial manufacturing.
It inhibits oxidative degradation and microbial growth, extending shelf life in regulated food applications and controlling unwanted chemical reactions in industrial processes. In food and beverage production, it functions as a preservative and antioxidant.
This additive is used in products such as wine, dried fruits, and processed vegetables, where oxidation control is critical to shelf life and color retention. Pulp and paper manufacturers use it as a bleaching and delignification agent.
In sulfite pulping processes, it breaks down lignin to produce high-quality cellulose fiber. Water treatment operations apply it to dechlorinate process water and potable water supplies by neutralizing residual chlorine before discharge or further processing.
It also serves flour treatment applications, where it conditions dough by modifying gluten structure to improve processing behavior. This versatility makes it a staple in both the chemical manufacturing and food science sectors.
The product is supplied as a white powder or fine crystalline solid. Food-grade material is available to the required specification for use in regulated food and beverage applications, ensuring safety and compliance.
Technical-grade material is offered for industrial uses including paper processing and water treatment. Our supply chain ensures consistent quality and availability for large-scale industrial requirements and specialized food production needs.
