Hydroxocobalamin
Description
Hydroxocobalamin (CAS 13422-51-0), also known as Vitamin B-12b, is a naturally occurring form of cobalamin distinguished by a hydroxyl ligand in place of the more common cyano group. OH-Cbl is the predominant cobalamin form found in food sources.
It serves as a direct precursor to the two biologically active coenzyme forms of B12. In pharmaceutical and nutritional manufacturing, it functions as both an active ingredient and a conversion intermediate for various formulations.
In injectable pharmaceutical formulations, it is the preferred B12 form for treating deficiency and cyanide poisoning. Its superior retention time over cyanocobalamin supports clinical dosing protocols in medical settings.
Nutraceutical and dietary supplement manufacturers use it in tablet, capsule, and sublingual formats targeting B12 repletion. Biotech and life sciences producers rely on it as a biosynthetic precursor for production.
It is used for producing adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin in specialized labs. In animal nutrition, it is incorporated into premixes and feed additives to support metabolic function in livestock and companion animals.
The material is supplied as a dark red to red crystalline powder for industrial use. Pharmaceutical-grade material is available to USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. specifications for global compliance.
Anhydrous and hydrated forms are both present in the market depending on the application. Bulk quantities are sourced for API manufacturing, while smaller pack sizes serve research and nutraceutical applications.
