Sodium gluconate
Description
Sodium gluconate (CAS 527-07-1), also known by its food additive designation E576, is the sodium salt of gluconic acid produced through fermentation of glucose. It functions primarily as a chelating agent, sequestering metal ions across industrial and food-grade applications.
This versatile chemical serves as a pH buffer in formulation systems where stability and controlled acidity are critical. In concrete and cement production, it acts as a set retarder and water reducer, improving workability and compressive strength in ready-mix and precast operations.
Water treatment facilities use it to control scale and metal ion deposition in boilers, cooling towers, and industrial pipework. Food and beverage manufacturers incorporate E576 as a mineral supplement carrier and acidity regulator in dairy products and beverages.
It is also used in processed foods and in textile and leather processing. It sequesters calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, preventing interference during dyeing and finishing operations to ensure high-quality results in manufacturing.
Sodium gluconate is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder and in liquid solution form. Standard grades include food-grade (FCC compliant), technical grade, and construction grade, with purity levels typically at 98% or higher for powder forms.
Bulk supply is available in bags and IBCs, with liquid concentrations commonly at 50% for industrial use. This ensures that the product meets the rigorous demands of various sectors while maintaining consistent performance and chemical stability.
