Lithium hexafluorophosphate
Description
Lithium hexafluorophosphate (CAS 21324-40-3), commonly referenced as LiPF6, is the dominant electrolyte salt in commercial lithium-ion battery manufacturing. It enables efficient lithium-ion transport between electrodes, directly determining cell conductivity and cycle life.
LiPF6 is the primary electrolyte solute in lithium-ion cells used across electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and grid-scale energy storage. It is dissolved in carbonate solvent blends to form the electrolyte solution for various applications.
Battery manufacturers formulate electrolytes at specific concentrations to meet cell performance targets for capacity retention and rate capability. Beyond standard Li-ion cells, it is used in electrolyte development for solid-state research.
Next-generation lithium battery research relies on this material for testing and development. Electrolyte producers and cell manufacturers source it as a critical input for both production-scale electrolyte blending and R&D formulation work.
Lithium hexafluorophosphate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or in pre-dissolved electrolyte solution form. Battery-grade is the commercially relevant specification, with purity levels typically at 99.9% or higher.
Strict controls are maintained on moisture, HF content, and metallic impurities to ensure performance. Packaging is offered in moisture-controlled formats, sealed under inert atmosphere, given the material's sensitivity to humidity.
Proper handling during storage and transit is essential to maintain the chemical integrity of the salt. This ensures that the final battery cells meet the rigorous safety and efficiency standards required by the global energy industry.
