Description

Pivaloyl chloride (CAS 3282-30-2), also known as trimethylacetyl chloride, is a reactive acylating agent used across pharmaceutical synthesis, agrochemical manufacturing, and specialty chemical production. It introduces the pivaloyl protecting group or activates carboxylic acid derivatives for downstream coupling reactions. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it activates amino acids and carboxylic acids to form mixed anhydrides.

This process enables efficient peptide bond formation and API synthesis. Agrochemical producers use it to manufacture herbicide and pesticide esters, where the bulky pivaloyl group improves hydrolytic stability. The compound functions as a catalyst precursor in Ziegler-Natta polymerization systems. In these applications, pivaloyl-based compounds influence catalyst activity and polymer tacticity during the manufacturing process.

Contract synthesis and fine chemical operations also rely on it for acylation steps in multi-stage routes to complex intermediates. It is a versatile building block for high-value chemical production. Pivaloyl chloride is supplied as a liquid in standard packaging ranging from small laboratory quantities to bulk drums. Technical and synthesis-grade material is the primary commercial form available.

Purity specifications are typically at 98% or higher for industrial use. Buyers should confirm moisture-controlled packaging requirements, as the product is sensitive to hydrolysis during storage and transit.
