Description

Phytic acid (CAS 83-86-3), also known as IP6 and carrying the food additive designation E391, is a naturally derived phosphoric acid ester extracted primarily from cereal grains and legumes. It functions as a chelating and sequestering agent, binding metal ions to prevent oxidative degradation. In food manufacturing, phytic acid controls metal-catalyzed rancidity and discoloration in oils, fats, and processed grain products where trace mineral contamination accelerates spoilage. This ensures product stability and maintains sensory profiles over time.

Personal care formulators incorporate it into anti-aging and skin-brightening products, where its metal-chelating action inhibits melanin synthesis pathways triggered by copper-dependent enzymes. It is a versatile ingredient for high-end cosmetic applications. Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturers use IP6 as an antioxidant stabilizer in tablet and capsule formulations to extend shelf life by scavenging free iron and copper. This prevents the degradation of sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients.

In industrial cleaning and surface treatment, it acts as a sequestrant to prevent mineral scaling and improve the performance of cleaning agents. Its natural origin makes it an attractive alternative to synthetic chelating agents in green chemistry. Phytic acid is supplied as a liquid solution, typically at 50% or 70% concentration, and less commonly as a dried powder. Standard grades include food-grade and technical-grade material, with food-grade product subject to purity specifications aligned with FCC requirements.

Pharmaceutical-grade material meeting USP or Ph.Eur. standards is available from select suppliers. These high-purity grades ensure compliance with rigorous international safety and quality benchmarks for sensitive manufacturing processes.
