Description

Potassium tartrate (CAS 921-53-9), also designated E336ii in food regulatory frameworks, is the dipotassium salt of tartaric acid used commercially as a pH buffer and stabilizer.

It occurs naturally in grapes and is recovered as a byproduct of wine production, giving it a well-established supply chain in food and cosmetic markets. In food manufacturing, it functions as a buffering agent.

It is used in confectionery, baked goods, and processed foods where precise acidity control affects texture and shelf stability. Winemakers use it to stabilize tartrate levels and prevent unwanted crystal formation.

In personal care formulations, it serves as a pH adjuster in creams, lotions, and cleansing products. This helps maintain the acidic environment required for skin-compatible formulations and product integrity.

It also acts as a mild antioxidant in food systems, protecting against oxidative degradation in sensitive ingredients. Potassium tartrate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or fine granules.

Food-grade material conforming to FCC specifications is the most commonly traded form. This material meets the purity requirements for direct food contact applications across various global markets.

Cosmetic-grade supply is also available for personal care manufacturers requiring documented quality standards. The material is highly soluble in water and provides consistent performance in aqueous solutions.
