Food and beverage: acidulant, pH buffer and flavoring agent that adjusts tartness and acidity in beverages, confectionery and fruit-flavored products
Pharmaceuticals: forms maleate salts with active ingredients to improve stability and solubility of oral dosage forms
Personal care: incorporated into bond-repair and straightening systems to restore and cross-link damaged hair structure
In topical formulations it functions as a pH regulator.
