Glycyrrhizin
Description
Glycyrrhizin (CAS 1405-86-3), also known as glycyrrhizinic acid and classified as E958 in food applications, is the principal bioactive triterpene glycoside extracted from licorice root.
It functions commercially as a natural sweetener, flavor modifier, and functional additive across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing. In food and beverage production, E958 delivers intense sweetness.
The compound is approximately 50 times sweeter than sucrose while simultaneously masking bitter off-notes in functional ingredients, protein blends, and nutraceutical formulations. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an excipient.
It is frequently used as a flavor-masking agent in oral dosage forms including syrups, lozenges, and chewable tablets. In personal care, it is incorporated into skin-soothing serums, toners, and brightening formulations.
The ingredient supports moisture retention and helps stabilize active ingredients against oxidative degradation. Confectionery and tobacco processing also rely on it as a flavor enhancer and humectant to control texture.
Glycyrrhizin is commercially available as an ammoniated form and as the free acid, supplied in powder and granular formats. Standard grades include food-grade (FCC) and pharmaceutical-grade material.
Our supply meets USP, BP, and cosmetic-grade requirements to satisfy regulatory standards across end markets. Purity specifications typically range from 95% to 98% depending on the intended application.
