Safflower oil
Description
Safflower oil (CAS 8001-23-8), also marketed as Saffola, is a pale, edible vegetable oil cold-pressed or solvent-extracted from the seeds of Carthamus tinctorius. It is commercially available in both high-oleic and high-linoleic variants, each targeting distinct industrial end uses.
Buyers source it primarily as a functional oil for food formulation, cosmetic emollients, and drying oil applications in coatings. In food manufacturing, high-linoleic safflower oil is used in salad dressings, margarine, and cooking oil blends.
These applications require a light flavor profile and high smoke point. The high-oleic grade is preferred in cosmetic and personal care formulations such as face oils, lotions, and hair serums where its skin-compatible fatty acid profile supports moisturizing.
In industrial coatings and alkyd resin production, the high-linoleic type functions as a semi-drying oil. This contributes to film formation in paints and varnishes, providing a renewable alternative to synthetic components.
Lubricant formulators also incorporate it into bio-based metalworking fluids as a renewable base fluid. Safflower oil is supplied as a clear to pale yellow liquid in bulk totes, drums, and flexi-tanks for global distribution.
Food-grade and USP/BP grades are available for regulated applications, while technical-grade material serves industrial coatings and lubricant markets. These standards ensure the product meets strict purity requirements.
High-oleic and high-linoleic variants are specified separately to meet specific formulation needs. Buyers should confirm the fatty acid profile against application requirements to ensure optimal performance in their final products.
